Metro says Pomona’s SR-71 project received a $25 million federal grant

The award would advance the second phase of a plan to close a two-mile gap in the freeway’s carpool-lane network. It does not set a construction date.

Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority reported Oct. 7 that the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded $25 million for the SR-71 Gap Closure Phase 2 project in Pomona.

Metro describes a proposed project that would add one high-occupancy-vehicle lane and one mixed-flow lane in each direction, elevate two bridges and replace a pedestrian overcrossing. The grant is partial project funding; Metro’s announcement does not provide a construction schedule.

Rent-program funding and Holt Avenue lanes are on the Oct. 19 council agenda

Pomona’s City Council and Housing Authority are scheduled to meet Monday, Oct. 19, with a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. and a regular meeting at 7 p.m. The agenda was still listed as final when checked Wednesday.

One staff item offers alternative reserve appropriations of $273,801 or $355,401 to continue rent-stabilization operations. Another asks the council to approve the scope of peak-hour bus and bicycle lanes on Holt Avenue between Fairplex Drive and Main Street, along with related agreements.

Status: These are proposed actions on a future agenda, not council decisions. The two funding alternatives are not additive.

County urges preparation for Oct. 15–16 wind and fire conditions

County public-safety agencies issued a preparedness notice for Santa Ana winds and elevated fire risk beginning Thursday and continuing through Friday night, with possible critical conditions Saturday.

The notice warns that outages could affect people who rely on powered medical equipment and says county fire crews have augmented staffing and pre-positioned resources.

Local limit: This countywide release does not establish a Pomona-specific warning, active fire or evacuation. The cited 50–70 mph gust forecast is for mountain areas, not Pomona.
